Research and Innovation (R&I) colleagues are invited to apply for a Christabel Pankhurst Institute* translation fellowship.
As part of its mission to build a community of practice around health technology, the Christabel Pankhurst Institute is launching its first call for translation fellowships, supporting early career academics and health professionals in work aimed at addressing the translation gap in health research.
To support alignment with the Christabel Pankhurst Institute’s mission, projects that advance health technology innovation and accelerate real-world clinical impact are particularly encouraged.
Examples include work related to:
Digital health and data-driven innovation
Diagnostics, monitoring, and early intervention technologies
Health system priorities within Greater Manchester.
The remit for work that could be considered for the fellowship is broad, and diverse
applications at any stage of the translational roadmap are welcomed. They could
include, but are not limited to:
Evidence generation/justification of need using routinely collected health data
Evaluation of potential impact in future clinical practice
Pilot or feasibility work.
Applicants are expected to identify where their proposed work fits on the translational pathway.
This fellowship is open to:
All resident doctors employed by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) from any specialty who, as a minimum, have completed FY1 training or overseas equivalent.
All nurses and allied health professionals, employed by MFT, who are agenda for change band 6 or above.
Early career academics, including PhD students, post-docs and academics within four years of their initial permanent appointment.
Funding
Funds are available for up to £5k per fellowship, with eligible costs including support from the MFT Clinical Data Science Unit (CDSU) and Hive Electronic Patient Record (EPR) Programme, The University of Manchester (UoM) Research Software Engineering team, PhD/PDRA time, as well as costs related to data collection, stakeholder engagement, team-building, dissemination or other relevant translation costs.
Duration
The fellowships will run from Sunday 1 March 2026 until Friday 31 July 2026 (five months) with a spending deadline at the end of the 25/26 financial year (31 July).
Commitment
Successful fellows from UoM are expected to spend one day per week at the Christabel Pankhurst Institute.
Successful fellows from the NHS are encouraged to spend time at the Christabel Pankhurst Institute as their clinical duties permit, engaging with the Pankhurst’s programme of events.

- 2 page statement of interest, highlighting the focus of the work proposed, its fit within the Christabel Pankhurst remit, anticipated outcomes, and costs.
- Record of assessing the proposed work within the Pankhurst Health Technology Translation Toolkit Progress Tracker (see https://translation- toolkit.manchester.ac.uk/roadmaps/progress-trackers/)
- For UoM PhD students and PDRAs: Confirmation of support of supervisor / line manager.
- For MFT applicants: a letter of support from the relevant associate medical director/director of nursing along with details of a named supervisor at MFT/UoM who is willing to support and guide the project.
- For projects that seek to use MFT’s Clinical Data Science Unit or the Hive EPR programme at MFT: confirmation that the project has been discussed with the relevant team and is supported.
- For projects that seek to use the support of the UoM Research Software Engineering team: confirmation that the project has been discussed with the team and is supported.
